A red variety of medium-size clusters and medium-size berries. Vine is vigorous and moderately hardy. Ripens 2 weeks after Concord. Variety should possibly be cluster thinned where ripening is a problem. Should be pruned more severly than the Concord. Yield can equal Concord. Catawba is a standard wine variety, making a fruity, American type wine. It is widely planted in New York State for both still wine, and Champagne.

Susceptibility to disease during an average growing season:
Black Rot - Extremely Susceptible
Downy Mildew - Extremely Susceptible (Consider spray program)
Powdery Mildew - Moderately Susceptible (Consider spray program)
Botrytis - Slightly Susceptible
This variety is not sensitive to Sulfur applications. But slight to moderate injury may occur even on tolerant varieties when temperatures are 85F or higher during or immediately following the application.
